The idea of a breakaway cable is that if the trailer came detached from the vehicle, the breakaway cable would pull on the handbrake lever activating the brakes. Once it has pulled on the brakes the breakaway cable will separate allowing the trailer to come to a stop away from from the towing vehicle.
